Pete MortonPETE MORTON with LOU & PETER BERRYMAN
A special “annotated” concert plus discussion about songwriting based on language, with Pete Morton and Lou & Peter Berryman, folksingers and songwriters who are obsessed with language. In cooperation with MadFolk, the UW Center for the Study of Midwestern Culture, editors of the Dictionary of American Regional English, and the UW Folklore Program.

Rich Warren of The Midnight Special (WFMT Chicago) says this about Pete Morton:
"With each CD he (Pete Morton) has jettisoned a bit more of the unnecessary frenzy until this CD, which reveals the naked diamond. It's just the voice and guitar of someone who has earned a place among the best singer-songwriters of the 21st century. The songs on this CD cover an amazing array of topics from politics to love, tragedy and comedy. All of his songs, no matter how dark, have a silver lining of optimism. His expressive voice serves his songs well."

Lou and Peter BerrymanLou & Peter: From their own mouths..."We write all our own songs. Lou writes the music, Peter writes the words. Lou plays accordion. Peter plays 12-string guitar. Most of our stuff is funny in one way or another. We've been making a living at this for almost twenty-five years. We are best friends and were married to each other briefly many years ago, hence the same last name, but have been happily married to our current respective spouses for decades. We both turned fifty five in 2002 so the duo has over 110 years' experience on the planet."

Mustard's RetreatMUSTARD'S RETREAT
Thirty-one years may not seem like such a long time in the life of a human being, a tree, or a folk song.  But in the fickle world of modern music, where pop stars shy of their 21st birthdays often see their careers dumped into oldies bins, thirty-five years is a very long time. So as David Tamulevich and Michael Hough celebrate their 31st Anniversary as Mustard's Retreat, the same question seemed to burn among aspiring young performers and road-weary old folkies - why you guys? In searching for the answer, one word comes up again and again, the simple word "audience."

The Bittersweet Christmas BandTHE BITTERSWEET CHRISTMAS BAND
In conjunction with Wild Hog in the Woods

The holidays are a mixed bag and so is the Bittersweet Christmas Band!
From Thanksgiving through December 25th, traditional artists Cooper, Nelson & Early join forces with songwriter and "wise" woman Susan Urban for a show that presents every possible perspective on the holiday season from the reverent to the ridiculous. Two to four-part harmonies and masterful instrumentation on guitar, hand drum and other percussion instruments, dulcimer and pennywhistle make the Bittersweet Christmas Band an act not to be missed!

Curtis and LorettaCURTIS & LORETTA
Curtis Teague: Vocals, guitar, mandolin, mandocello, clawhammer banjo, steel ukulele, harmonica
Loretta Simonet Vocals, Celtic harp, guitar, mandolin, kazoo, shakers

"Loretta's almost operatic alto and Curtis' rich tenor form a lush, polished and varied vocal blend. The pair's instrumental interplay is equally compelling, with Loretta's harp textures dancing in and around Curtis' deft guitar and mandolin lines."
- Dirty Linen

Jan KristOpening the show will be Jan Krist.
Detroit born Jan Krist is a well established veteran of the acoustic music scene. Her musical gifts have been recognized by Billboard Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Dirty Linen, Image Journal, and others.
“...a writer whose gift as a songwriter equals - if not surpasses her vocal gifts. She has an uncanny way of cutting to the heart of a topic and providing the listener with food for thought.”

Carrie Newcomer CARRIE NEWCOMER
Carrie Newcomer’s tenth and newest Philo/Rounder release, Regulars and Refugees, is the all new, literary follow-up to last year’s Betty’s Diner: The Best of Carrie Newcomer. In addition to a remix of the song “Betty’s Diner,” the 13 new songs on the CD take the listener inside the world of that very same diner, a songwriting tour d’ force that only a veteran like Newcomer can pull off. This is more than a concept album, however. It’s a collection of well-hewn stories that stand on their own while standing together to say something important and true about the human condition.

Bill Staines BILL STAINES
A Mad Folk favorite!

For over thirty five years, Bill has traveled back and forth across North America, singing his songs and delighting audiences at festivals, folksong societies, colleges, concerts, clubs and coffeehouses. A New England native, Bill became involved with the Boston- Cambridge folk scene in the early 1960s and, for a time, emceed the Sunday hootenanny at the renowned Club 47 in Cambridge. Bill quickly became a popular performer in the Boston area. In 1971, after one of his performances, a reviewer for The Phoenix stated that Bill was "simply Boston's best performer." A decade later, both in 1980 and 1981, the annual Reader's Poll of The Boston Globe selected him as a favorite performer. In 1991, Bill entered his forth decade as a folk performer with an international reputation as an artist. Singing mostly his own songs, he has become one of the most popular singers on the folk music circuit today and averages around 200 concert dates a year.

Bill IslesOpening the show will be Bill Isles.
"Bill Isles' performance style and songs are as comfortable as your favorite blanket. You get wrapped up in them and don't want to leave the warmth they create."
- Al Kniola - WVPE-FM (NPR), Elkhart, IN (in reaction to "The Shores of My Hometown")

Nathan Rogers NATHAN ROGERS
Some say he was born into it, some that he was born with it, while others claim he has earned it. With one foot planted firmly in folk music’s traditional roots and the other reaching into its dynamic future, Nathan Rogers isn’t entirely sure what ‘it’ is; singer, songwriter, guitarist, throat-chanter, percussionist, revivalist, or innovator. Whatever it may be, “Nathan has the ability to turn the folk world on its ears.” With a degree in comparative religion, an award winning voice and two prized Laskin guitars under his belt, Nathan released his debut album, True Stories, in 2005. Nathan’s performance style leaves the audiences wondering where the rest of the band is hiding. Singing, chanting, playing the guitar and stomping, he fills any stage with “magnificent powerfully clear lyrics and arrangements.” Described as ‘intelligent and witty’, Nathan will ‘move men and women to tears with his sound and conviction.”

Opening the show will be Tracy Jane Comer, no stranger to Madison stages but also an international award-winning singer-songwriter whose music has been heard on radio and TV around the globe. Tracy is a nominee in the 2008 Madison Area Music Awards for BEST INSTRUMENTALIST. She has appeared with notables including Willy Porter, The Wailin' Jennys, Holly Near, L.J. Booth, and others.  "The musicianship on Quietly There is near perfection...Tracy’s biggest talent, however, lies in her incredible songwriting...From complex melodies and lyrics to simpler 'catchy’ tunes, her versatility is endless... [her] compositions are poetic, melodic, moving, thought provoking and soothing to the spirit... "  - Midwest Bands

Steve & Cindy:
According to the Sing Out Magazine review of Steve and Cindy's latest album, Being There, "Steve and Cindy have hit on a combination that consistently produces high quality recordings and entertaining stage shows. Their voices and styles meld seamlessly with a gentleness and a maturity that is unmatched in the world of folk duos." Their web page (link above) includes a wealth of information about the duo: sound files, a full one-hour concert video recorded at the Kennedy Center, and an infamous jokes page, plus a wealth of links to other folk music resources on the Web.

DAVID FRANCEY
With accompanist Craig Werth
David Francey was born in 1954 in Ayrshire, Scotland. He was 12 when his family immigrated to Toronto. He says he can trace his love of the land, the history, and the people of his adopted country to weekend family drives exploring southern Ontario. Music played a large part in these family outings. They sang traditional Scottish tunes as they drove through the Canadian countryside. His attachment to Canada grew with travel. He hitched across the country three times, then thumbed his way to the Yukon. This attachment surfaces in his songs of rail lines, farms, and the St. Lawrence Seaway. He grew to understand the people while working in Toronto train yards, the Yukon bush, and as a carpenter in the Eastern Townships. In concert, David is a singer and a storyteller who can establish, in minutes, a personal rapport with his audience. His wry humour and astute observations combined with his openhearted singing style have earned him a loyal following.
